Keep Your Pool Filter Clean
Think of the pool filter like a filter in a vacuum, if it’s clogged and dirty, it is no longer efficiently cleaning. To clean your sand filter, first shut the pump off. Move the multiport clockwise until you reach the backwash setting, now turn the pump back on. Waiting until the sight-glass, located on the side of the filter, is clean, then turn the pump back off and move the multiport to rinse. Turning the pump back on, allow the filter to be on rinse for approximately 30-60 seconds. Shut the pump off, move back to filter and turn the pump back on.
The most common type of pool filter is a sand filter. While using Ruby sand in your sand filter, it filters water down to an exceptionally fine 3 to 5 microns. This porous ceramic sand dramatically outperforms traditional silica sand (which only filters down to 20 to 40 microns), providing near-DE filter clarity. Silica sand is still a great option when using a sand filter. Ruby sand is just extremely light, weight wise and offers more filtration than regular silica sand.
Cartridge filter and keeping it clean is relatively easy. When it’s time for a cleaning, grab the hose, gently remove the filter and start spraying — but not harshly, a gentle stream will do. If you spray the filter with too high-pressure you can cause damage, ultimately having to buy yourself a new filter because the debris will either furrow itself deeper in the cartridge or you’ll tear or damage the filter.
If you still notice that the pool is not functioning at its best after you routinely clean your filter, it might be time for a sand change, or a replacement element for your cartridge filter. Please give the store a call or stop in with any questions or concerns you may have, we are here to help!
Filter Sand Changes
Due to the overwhelming workload in the spring we will not be doing pool filter sand changes during the peak pool-opening season. We highly recommend that your filters are replaced in April and prior to your pool opening date if the weather permits.
- Above ground pool filters up to 200 LBS. – $ 395.00 including Ruby filter sand
- Larger pool filters 250- 350LBS - $ 475.00 including Ruby filter sand
- Pools that use Baquacil or Soft Swim should have their filter sand changed every year.
- Pools that use any type of chlorine should have their filters changed every 3-5 years, unless clarity issues are persistent.
Pool Openings & Closings
When the spring and winter months roll around, make sure your pool is ready. Aqua Pool & Spa Pros offers pool opening and closing services to ensure your pool is ready to swim in spring and ready to hibernate in winter.

Keeping your pool filter clean is one of the easiest ways to keep your system running efficiently. If your water circulation or clarity declines even after cleaning, it may be time to replace your filter. Our team can help determine the best replacement for your pool system.
Common signs include low water circulation, cloudy water, leaks, equipment noises, or inconsistent heating. If you notice any of these, schedule a service appointment as soon as possible — early diagnosis can prevent more costly issues later.
